Certification by outside agencies is a tool to guarantee all stakeholders – whether customers, personnel or shareholders – that the management system under examination works in an efficient manner for the business or field in question. Capacity for continual improvement is often investigated, making it possible to measure an organization’s ability to innovate.
There are several types of certification:

ISO 9001 certification has become an international symbol of quality management practice. It has been implemented at more than 600,000 organizations in 160 countries, and attests that an organization meets the strict requirements of quality management system standards.
ISO 9001:2000 certification proves our strong commitment to provide a high level of quality, not only in our products but in all the aspects of our activities around the world.

Product certification is sought whenever it can offer extra value to the customer and the user. Wherever products are made, any that need it are certified UL, CSA, VDE, etc.
To design and manufacture electrical products for today's marketplace, you need to "think global." This is especially true when it comes to product safety certification.
Ferraz Shawmut has circuit protection products to help you meet every major standard in every country. We work with regulatory bodies the world over to test and certify our products, so you can choose components that will meet the product safety requirements of the markets you want to reach.
Evidence of these approvals are the certification marks found imprinted on our products. Here are some of the more common marks and what they mean:
The mark most familiar in the U.S., the UL Listed Mark is issued by Underwriters Laboratories. It signifies that a product has been tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) and met the requirements of widely accepted product safety standards. For more information, visit www.ul.com.
UL Listed products are also manufactured under the UL Follow-Up Services program, which means UL will periodically retest random samples from a manufacturer's inventory to ensure that the product continues to comply with standards and perform within accepted levels of operation.

Products bearing this mark are generally components of a product that will later be tested as a whole to obtain a UL Listed Mark. Using UL Recognized components does not ensure an automatic UL listing, however. The complete final product must be tested as a unit. To learn more, visit www.ul.com.
Issued by the Canadian Standards Association, the CSA Mark signifies a product that is tested to Canadian product safety standards. Products certified for sale in Canada may also bear the relatively new C-UL Mark issued by Underwriters Laboratories. To learn more, visit www.csa.ca.

The CE Mark, required for products intended for sale anywhere in the European Union, shows that a product has been tested by a Notified Body and meets the requirements of all relevant European directives. This is a self-declaration made by the manufacturer. ‘To learn more, visit www.europa.eu/scadplus/leg/en/lvb/l21013.htm
The VDE Testing and Certification Institute is testing electrotechnical and electronic components, machines, appliances and systems for electrical, mechanical, thermal and other relevant characteristics - including electromagnetic compatibility, ensuring the safety of electrotechnical products, systems and installations. It participates in international conformity assessment schemes.
When products worldwide carry VDE Certification Marks, it is perceived as the safety mark on electrical products.
The VDE Certification Marks are not only a national German Mark as they are registered and protected in more than 30 countries and used by manufacturers in over 50 countries worldwide.
For more information, visit www.vde.com.
The British Standards Institution Mark — known as the Kitemark — is proof of compliance with standards endorsed by BSI, the world's first national standards organization. For more information, visit www.bsi-global.com.
Granted by independent laboratory ETL SEMKO, the S Mark designates products that comply with safety requirements applicable to the European Union. To learn more, visit www.intertek-etlsemko.com
The CCC mark and certification is compulsory to import or sell products in China (products intended either for sale within China or to be built into equipment intended to remain in China). It is granted by the Chinese authorities after an audit of production locations and type testing of the products. The CB scheme is organized at the international level inside the IEC to allow international companies to get international acceptance of the CB test reports made by independent recognized laboratories. It includes 43 countries, 54 certification organizations and 129 laboratories. Through this procedure, the same product will be recognized under different national certification marks. to learn more visit www.iecee.org
